What
is Hospice?
Hospice is not a specific place. It is a comprehensive program
of care designed to provide respect and dignity for life in its final stages.
Hospice’s emphasis is on comfort, not cure, with the primary goal of
maintaining the terminally ill patient’s quality of life. Rooted in a
centuries-old tradition of providing a place for shelter
and rest, hospice has become a philosophy of care, offering comfort and
compassion for those at the end of their journey.
Is
Hospice Right for You?
To be eligible for Professional Healthcare Resources
Hospice, the terminally ill patient’s physician must certify that the patient’s
life expectancy is limited to six months or less if the illness runs its normal
course. The patient also must have adequate caregiving to assure patient safety
and the location to receive care must be in
Professional
Healthcare Resources Hospice
Professional Healthcare Resources Hospice
emphasizes meeting the physical, spiritual, social and psychological needs of
terminally ill patients and their family members. Our hospice team supports the
patient in their decision to remain in a comfortable and familiar environment.
The hospice team combines the professional skills needed to care for the
terminally ill patient with the compassion to support and comfort the patient
and family. This specialized care begins upon admission and continues through a
13-month period of bereavement. Our multidisciplinary team includes physicians,
registered nurses, social workers, home health aides, therapists, chaplains, a
bereavement team and specially trained volunteers and office support staff.
Every effort is made to effectively manage
symptoms caused by the terminal illness that negatively impact the patient’s
quality of life. We focus on providing relief from physical, emotional and
spiritual pain.
Home visits from members of the hospice team
are provided on a regular basis depending on the needs of the patient and
family. On call service is available 24 hours a day, every day. If care in an
inpatient setting is required, our hospice team will arrange for the patient’s
hospice plan of care to be continued at the inpatient site.
Is
Hospice Care Covered by health insurance?
Most health insurance covers hospice or some form of end
of life care. The Medicare Hospice Benefit covers 100% of hospice care for
eligible beneficiaries who elect to use that benefit. Professional Healthcare
Resources Hospice is Medicare certified.
In addition to Medicare, we accept numerous other insurances. Our team can
assist in determining an individuals’ insurance coverage.
Volunteers and donations are graciously
welcomed
Hospice volunteers are an essential part of our program
and philosophy. All volunteers complete a training program which prepares them
to serve in a variety of ways, including direct patient care, bereavement care
and administrative functions. For information on becoming a hospice volunteer,
